RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Empathy is a critical component of nursing care, impacting both nurses' and patients' outcomes. However, perceived empathy from spouses during pregnancy and its impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are unclear. This study aimed to examine pregnant women's perceived empathy from their spouses and assess the relation of perceived empathy on HRQoL. METHODS: This cross-sectional study, performed in the obstetric clinics or wards of four well-known hospitals in Anhui Province, China, included 349 pregnant women in the second or third trimester; participants were recruited by convenience sampling and enrolled from October to December 2021. A general information questionnaire, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), a purpose-designed empathy questionnaire and the Medical Outcomes Study 12-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12) were used to evaluate the pregnant women's general information, perceptions of empathy and HRQoL. Data were analysed using SPSS 22 at a threshold of P < 0.05. Descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, Student's t test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis were used for analysis. RESULTS: The pregnant women's total empathy, physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) scores were 41.6 ± 9.0, 41.6 ± 7.6, and 47.7 ± 9.1, respectively. Correlation analysis revealed that the purpose-designed empathy questionnaire items were significantly positively correlated with perspective taking and empathic concern but were not correlated with the personal distress dimension and were only partially correlated with the fantasy dimension. Maternal physical condition during pregnancy, planned pregnancy, and occupational stress were predictors of the PCS score (ß = 0.281, P < 0.01; ß = 0.132, P = 0.02; ß = -0.128, P = 0.02). The behavioural empathy item of our purpose-designed empathy questionnaire and empathic concern were important predictors of the MCS score (ß = 0.127, P = 0.02; ß = 0.158, P < 0.01), as well as other demographic and obstetric information, explaining 22.0% of the variance in MCS scores totally (F = 12.228, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Pregnant women perceived lower empathy from their spouses and reported lower HRQoL. Perceived empathy, particularly behavioural empathy, may significantly impact pregnant women's MCS scores but has no effect on their PCS scores. Strategies that foster perceived empathy from spouses among pregnant women are essential for facilitating healthy pregnancies and potentially improving maternal and child health.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the motives of clinical nurses for experiencing empathy with patients and their families based on a self-determination theory framework. METHODS: Semi-structured face-to-face interviews with twenty-one nurses at four tertiary hospitals in Anhui, China, were conducted, recorded and transcribed. A content analysis with a directed approach was performed. RESULTS: An analysis of the interview transcripts revealed three categories of empathy motivation: autonomous motivation, controlled motivation and a lack of empathy motivation. Autonomous motivation included personal interests, enjoyment and a sense of value, pure altruism, assimilation, and recognition of the importance of empathy. Controlled motivation highlighted pressures from oneself and others, the possibility of tangible or intangible rewards, and avoidance of adverse effects. Finally, a lack of empathy motivation referred to a lack of intention for empathy and denial of the value of empathy. CONCLUSION: This study provides a deep understanding of the motives underlying empathy in nurses. The results reveal the reasons for empathy and may support the development of effective strategies to foster and promote empathy in nurses.

RESUMO

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To develop and validate an instrument to measure nurses' empathy motivation in China (See Supporting Information Appendix S1). BACKGROUND: Nurses are increasingly expected to empathise with patients in clinical settings. However, research investigating nurses' empathy motivation in China is lacking, and no specific instrument exists worldwide. DESIGN: Two-stage cross-sectional study, which follows the STROBE guidelines. Instrument development and psychometric evaluation were used (See Supporting Information Appendix S1). METHODS: A literature review and qualitative interviews with nurses were conducted to generate the initial items. Convenience samples of 340 (for item analysis) and 640 (for psychometric evaluation) clinical nurses working at four tertiary hospitals in Anhui Province were recruited. The scale was validated by content validity, surface validity and item analysis. A total of 640 participants were randomly divided into two equal groups. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was used with varimax rotation, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and internal consistency reliability to analyse the psychometric properties of the scale (See Supporting Information Appendix S1). RESULTS: From the initial 90-item pool, 27 items were retained by the item analysis. The EFA (N = 290) showed the following six factors on the scale explained 71.266% of the overall variance: amotivation, external regulation, introjected regulation, identified regulation, integrative regulation and intrinsic motivation. Furthermore, when limited to three factors, that is autonomy motivation, controlled motivation and amotivation, 56.578% of the variance was explained. The findings showed high internal consistency. The six-factor solution and three-factor solution of the scale, including 27 items, were both confirmed by the CFA, for example χ2 /df = 1.744, 2.261; RMSEA = 0.051, 0.066; GFI = 0.882, 0.847; TLI = 0.942, 0.902; and RMR = 0.039, 0.049, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The nurses' empathy motivation scale presents good psychometric properties and can be used to explore nurses' empathy motivation in China (See Supporting Information Appendix S1). RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This study offers insight into nurses' complicated reasons for exhibiting empathy.

RESUMO

Paclitaxel (PTX) loaded multilayered liposomes were prepared using layer-by-layer assembly in an effort to improve the stabilization of the liposomal compositions for PTX delivery. Stearyl amine was used to provide positive charge to the PTX-liposomes, and subsequently coated with anionic polyacrylic acid (PAA) followed by cationic chitosan. Various process variables were optimized and the optimum formulation was found to have particle size of 215 ± 17 nm, zeta potential of +27.9 ± 3.4 mV and encapsulation efficiency of 70.93 ± 2.39%. The lyophilized chitosan-PAA-PTX-liposomes formulation was stable in simulated gastrointestinal fluids and at different environmental conditions (4 °C and 25 °C). In vitro drug release experiments demonstrated that chitosan-PAA-PTX-liposomes formulation exhibited obvious sustained release behaviors compared to PTX-liposomes. Furthermore, chitosan-PAA-PTX-liposomes formulation revealed enhanced PTX induced cytotoxicity in human cervical cancer cell culture experiments compared to PTX-liposomes. In conclusion, the approach presented herein will provide a promising solution for PTX delivery.

RESUMO

Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain 2 (NOD2) is one of the most prominent member of the NOD-like receptors protein family that functions as intracellular pattern recognition receptors. Numerous studies have suggested the importance of NOD2 in defensing against microbial infections, regulation of the inflammatory process. It is shown that NOD2 contributes to the pathogenesis of various autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases, such as Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis. The aim of this study is to summarize our current understandings of NOD2 function and the role of NOD2 in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The following databases were searched: Pubmed, EMBASE and Web of Science for English-language sources, using the terms "lupus," "systemic lupus erythematosus," ''SLE," "immunity," "inflammatory" and "NOD2." Emerging data evidences that NOD2 has important biological effects in autoimmunity and inflammatory and might take part in the pathogenesis of SLE. Studies exploring the relationship between NOD2 and SLE are very limited. Whether NOD2 could be a potentially valuable therapeutic target for treatment for SLE, more understanding of the mechanism of NOD2 is needed in the future in SLE.

RESUMO

Published data on the association between interleukin (IL)-18 gene polymorphisms (-137 C/G, -607 A/C) and type 1 diabetes (T1D) risk are inconclusive. To obtain a more precise estimation of the association between the IL-18 gene polymorphisms and T1D, a meta-analysis was performed. A total of 11 studies including 5,945 cases and 6,404 controls were included in the analysis of the association between -137 C/G and T1D risk. No significant association between -137 C/G and T1D risk was observed in the total population [C vs. G: odds ratio (OR)=1.02, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.87-1.20; CC + CG vs. GG: OR=1.05, 95% CI=0.87-1.25; CC vs. CG + GG: OR=0.96, 95% CI=0.68-1.36]. No significant association was identified in the stratified analysis for all the genetic models in the European population. Concerning -607 A/C, 10 studies involving 3,048 patients and 3,377 controls were included in this meta-analysis. When all the studies were pooled, the results showed no evidence for a significant association between IL-18 -607 A/C polymorphism and T1D risk (A vs. C: OR=0.93, 95% CI=0.81-1.06; AA + AC vs. CC: OR=0.99, 95% CI=0.89-1.10; AA vs. AC + CC: OR=0.81, 95% CI=0.60-1.09). In addition, similar results were obtained in the subgroup analysis based on ethnicity. In summary, the present meta-analysis suggests a lack of association between the two polymorphisms (-137 C/G, -607 A/C) in the IL-18 gene and T1D. Due to the limitation of the number of the studies, the conclusions drawn should be considered with caution. Larger scale primary studies are required to evaluate the association between IL-18 gene polymorphisms and T1D.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the protective effect of medicated serum prepared with Taohong Siwu Tang on hydrogen peroxide-injured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). METHOD: Sprague Dawley rats were orally administered with 10 mL x kg(-1) extracts from Taohong Siwu Tang (1.75 g crude drug), twice a day for three days, in order to prepare medicated serum of Taohong Siwu Tang. The effect of medicated serum pre-treated with Taohong Siwu Tang (with concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15%) on reduction of H2O2-induced cell activity was detected MTT. Cell morphological changes were observed under microscope. The effect of medicated serum prepared with Taohong Siwu Tang on the apoptosis and antioxidant capacity of HUVECs was detected with the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) and dehydrogenase (LDH), the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and AO/EB staining. The expression of Caspase-3 was determined by western blot. RESULT: Compared with the blank serum control group, cell were significantly less active after being damaged by H2O2 (400 micromol x L(-1)). Medicated serum could significantly improve the SOD activity, reduce the levels of LDH and MDA, and inhibite the expression of Caspase-3. AO/EB staining and inverted microscope also showed that medicated serum prepared with Taohong Siwu Tang could reduce cell apoptosis induced by H2O2. CONCLUSION: Medicated serum prepared with Taohong Siwu Tang has significant protective effect on HUVECs injured by H2O2.

RESUMO

Cytotoxic T lymphocyte associated antigen-4 (CTLA-4) -1722T/C polymorphism has been identified as a susceptibile gene for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), but studies are inconsistent. To better assess the association between CTLA-4 -1722T/C polymorphism and SLE, a meta-analysis was performed, including 10 studies, total of 1 387 patients and 1 617 controls. Overall, the CTLA-4 -1722T/C polymorphism was significantly associated with SLE susceptibility (T VS C: OR = 1.17, 95% CI = 0.86-1.60, P = 0.304; T/T VS C/C: OR = 1.92, 95% CI = 1.09-3.39, P = 0.024; T/C VS C/C: OR = 1.50, 95% CI = 0.91-2.49, P = 0.114; T/T VS T/C: OR = 1.29, 95% CI = 0.95-1.75, P = 0.107). When stratified by ethnicity, the CTLA-4 -1722T/C polymorphism was associated with SLE only in Asians (T VS C: OR = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.10-1.96, P = 0.010; T/T VS C/C: OR = 2.09, 95% CI = 1.13-3.85, P = 0.018; T/C VS C/C: OR = 1.53, 95% CI = 0.87-2.69, P = 0.141; T/T VS T/C: OR = 1.42, 95% CI = 0.97-2.09, P = 0.070). In summary, the CTLA-4 -1722T/C polymorphism confers to SLE risk, especially in Asians.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of Taohong Siwu decoction (THSWD) on micro-vascular density (MVD) in rat uterus, the content of angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1) and angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) in serum, and the expression of tyrosine kinasa receptor (Tie-2) in uterus. METHOD: Early pregnancy rats were intragastrically administrated with misoprostol (100 microg x kg(-1)) and mifepristong (8.3 mg x kg(-1)) to established the incomplete-abortion model. The incomplete-abortion rats were randomly divided into the model group (the same volume of distilled water), the positive control group (at the daily dose of 4.3 g x kg(-1) Motherwort Particles), and THSWD-treated groups (at the daily dose of 18.0, 9.0 and 4.5 g x kg(-1)). Pregnant rats were taken as the control group (the same volume of distilled water). After the successive oral administration for 7 days, blood was collected from aorta abdominalis, and rat uterine tissues were collected. The content of serum Ang-1 and Ang-2 were detected by ELISA; And the levels of Tie-2 and MVD in uterine tissues were detected by SP immunohistochemistry. RESULT: THSWD remarkably increased the levels of MVD in uterus of medicine-induced abortion rats, the content of Ang-1 and Ang-2 in serum, and the expression of Tie-2 in uterine tissues. CONCLUSION: THSWD has the effect in markedly promoting angiogenesis in incomplete-abortion rats. Its mechanism may be related to the regulation of concentrations of Ang-1 and Ang-2 in serum and Tie-2 in uterine tissues.

RESUMO

Two types of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were adopted to analyze the effects of exoelectrogens and electron acceptors on the electrogenesis performance of MFCs. One was conventional MFCs inoculated with sewage and using nitrate as electron acceptor (S-MFCs), and the other one was modified MFCs inoculated with anaerobic treated wastewater and using ferricyanide as electron acceptor (A-MFCs). Exoelectrogens and electron acceptors had substantial effects on the acclimation period and the power output period of MFCs. The acclimation period was reduced from 500 h for S-MFCs to 430 h for A-MFCs, and the power output period was prolonged from 100 h for S-MFCs to 350 h for A-MFCs. The modified MFCs increased the removal of COD and the output of voltage by 25% and 300%, respectively. To select appropriate exoelectrogens and electron acceptors were crucial to the improvement of MFCs performance.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the features of violence among primary and secondary school students in Hefei, and to set up intervention measures for violence prevention. METHODS: Four schools in Hefei were randomly sampled in the study. A total of 3064 students completed a questionnaire. RESULTS: 16.22% of the pupils reported having suffered from violence at least once every month. The rate was higher in boys than that in girls's (chi(2) = 25.13, P = 0.000). The major assaulters were from classmates (45.80%), with hand beating (37.42%), insulting (31.21%), threatening (20.88%), and 10.49% using sticks and sharp weapons. Most violence occurred at school (46.08%), followed by at home (28.41%) and outside of schools (25.51%), with significant difference (P = 0.000). As a result, 3.33% ended up with fractures, and 0.51% with disability. 97 pupils reported having assaulted others frequently (3.21%). Being irritated (47.38%) was the major reason for the violence to occur. CONCLUSION: Violence among primary and secondary school students in Hefei city was serious that called for targeted education be strengthened and school environment be improved.
